The shadow and devastation of hurricane Ida will likely last for years. It’s immediate impact in the US seems obvious but its impact is not just global.

The Midwest often has been called America’s breadbasket, but the truth today is that it is much of the world’s breadbasket.

According to data made available by the US Department of Agriculture, about 9% rely on a Cargill terminal damaged by hurricane Ida.

This accounts for over 5 million tons of corn and about 1.5 million tons of other crops such as wheat and soybeans.

The impact here will likely mean cheaper products here at home but major challenges abroad. In particular, demand in China is especially high. Roughly half of the above mentioned products ultimately are bound for China.
